Özdemir wants to better protect animals on wide transports

In the European Union there are no uniform rules for animal transport that lead to countries outside the Union area. The German Minister of Agriculture is going to go on a national goal.

A new set of rules is to ensure minimum standards for animal welfare for animal transport from Germany in countries outside the EU. The Federal Ministry of Agriculture has now presented the key points. “Because there is still no EU solution, I made Brussels a new proposal so that animals on days of transport from the EU no longer suffer or die painfully, said Federal Minister of Agriculture Cem Özdemir (Greens).

Accordingly, the export of living animals should only be allowed if the respective target countries and the transit countries commit themselves to comply with certain animal welfare standards. This includes stays of the animals at supply stations and an animal welfare -compliant handling of them on the entire route.

The current federal government will no longer be able to realize the project. A new Bundestag will be elected in a week. However, the Ministry of Agriculture carefully prepared the solution and has now presented the EU Commission for the exam, said Özdemir.
