Record job vacancies last year – 146,000 unfilled in the quarter

The largest increase in job vacancies was in manufacturing, up 50 percent year-on-year. “In 2021, an average of 40,200 jobs were vacant here,” says Statistics Austria Director General Tobias Thomas.

The service sector, which was severely affected by the 2020 corona pandemic, also had 85,400 vacancies. An average of 20,400 jobs were advertised in the public sector. This corresponds to an increase of 26 percent compared to the previous year.

People for service professions and salespeople (22 percent) as well as people for craft and related professions (19.4 percent) were sought particularly frequently. At 84.4 percent, the majority of the jobs offered were advertised as full-time positions. 6.8 percent of the job offers were seasonally limited.

Around 62 percent of the vacancies were also reported by the companies to the Public Employment Service (AMS). The job vacancy rate (share of vacancies in all available jobs) rose to 3.5 percent in 2021. In 2020 it was 2.6 percent, Statistics Austria calculated in a broadcast today.

Compared to the previous year, there were slightly fewer jobs with very short search times. In 2021, 20.6 percent of vacancies had been advertised for less than a month, compared to 24 percent in 2020. At 21.6 percent, the proportion of permanent tenders remained at a similar level as in the previous year.
