“All over the country”: warning strikes announced in the public service

In the next few days, new warning strikes in daycare centers, local transport or the garbage disposal will be available to the citizens.

The public service faces the federal and municipalities in front of several weeks of warning strikes. The unions Verdi and civil servant association announced on Tuesday evening after the second unsuccessful remuneration in Potsdam to expand their industrial struggles nationwide before the next negotiations. Verdi Federal Chief Frank Werneke spoke of a very disappointing course of negotiation, the municipalities were “on the brake”.

So far no details of nationwide warning strikes

Werneke said on Tuesday evening: “There are no concessions on the subject of the increase in a fee, or to improve working conditions or relief. This gives away the chance and municipalities the chance of a quick agreement.” He spoke of a “fatal signal to employees and to the citizens”.

“The employers block a solution and completely misjudge the seriousness of the situation,” said negotiator of the German Civil Service Association (DBB), Volker Geyer. The pressure in the negotiations must now be significantly increased. “In the next three weeks, we will therefore organize warning strikes and protests all over the country,” said Geyer. Verdi and the DBB civil servant Association do not initially provide details on planned actions.

The second round of the collective bargaining started on Monday. The unions demand eight percent, but at least 350 euros more money and an additional three free days. The public employers had initially not presented a negotiable offer from the perspective of the unions. The third tariff round is also agreed in Potsdam from March 14th to 16th.

Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) was “confident of reaching an agreement in the third round of negotiations”. She explained: “We want to find adequate and fair solutions for the federal government and the municipalities as well as for employees in the public service.” This is “a question of respect for what the 2.6 million employees of the public service of the federal and municipalities do every day for all of us in Germany”.
