Consumers had to dig deep into their pockets for butter at discounters and supermarkets. The prices have been falling again for a few weeks.
The butter prices for consumers in Germany continue to decrease. Large retail chains reduce the price for a 250-gram pack of German branded butter of their own brands by 20 cents or a good nine percent to 1.99 euros. This was the result of a survey by the German Press Agency. Other butter products should also be cheaper.
The first thing the Discounter Lidl explained to reduce prices from Wednesday. This started a spiral: chains such as Edeka, Netto, Kaufland, Norma and Penny also announced price reductions in their own brands. This should happen promptly. Aldi Süd and Aldi Nord initially left an inquiry unanswered. If individual food dealers permanently reduce corner price items such as butter, others usually follow quickly.
Butter prices have been falling again since the beginning of February. Previously, the price for the cheapest packet of German brand butter had risen to 2.39 euros in October 2024. As much as never before. According to experts, the reasons were smaller amounts of milk that are supplied by the farmers, and a lower fat content in raw milk. In summer, the blue tongue disease led to the break -in of milk yield in affected animals.
There have been large price fluctuations in butter in recent years. In the summer of 2023, customers had to pay EUR 1.39 in most shops for a parcel of their own brand butter in most shops. The shelf prices for comparable products from brand manufacturers are always higher.
