At the end of February, Ukraine plans to disconnect from the power grids of Russia and Belarus as part of a 72-hour test, switching to work in an isolated mode, and at the beginning of next year it is planned to connect to the Western European energy system. This was written on February 5 by the German edition of Welt am Sonntag.
According to him, a total of two test shutdowns are planned – from February 24 to 26 and in the summer.
Amos Hochstein, Advisor to the US Secretary of State for Energy Security, spoke positively about this step in a conversation with the German government.
“Thus, Ukraine resolutely declares its desire to be associated with the European Union. I really hope that the integration of the electric power system will happen this year, ”Hochstein said.
The publication indicated that the Russian “System Operator of the Unified Energy System” reported that it was ready to cooperate with Ukraine on shutting down, after the test, synchronization with the systems of Russia and Belarus would be performed. At the same time, Ukrenergo told the publication that if, after a test shutdown, it is not possible to reconnect to the network, the Ukrainian system has a sufficient “margin of safety” for isolated operation for a long time.
Earlier, in March 2021, Minister of Energy of Ukraine Yuriy Vitrenko, during an online meeting with the head of the Lithuanian Ministry of Energy, announced that the Ukrainian energy system would separate from the energy systems of Russia and Belarus in 2022. It is planned that after this, in 2023, the country’s energy system will be fully synchronized with the European network of system operators for the transmission of electricity ENTSO-E. It was noted that this would ensure the demonopolization of the electricity market in Ukraine and help introduce effective transparent European rules and procedures on it.
