Tesla boss Elon Musk currently appears on the side of US President Donald Trump. The sale of Tesla cars in Germany continues to collapse. Experts give possible reasons.
German car buyers continue to keep the distance from electric cars from the US manufacturer Tesla. The sales of new cars of the company, which was led by Tech billionaire Elon Musk, decreased significantly again in Germany in February – even though significantly more electric cars came on the streets. As can be seen from data from the Federal Motor Transport Authority, 76.3 percent fewer Teslas have been re-approved than in the same month.
In total there were 1,429 cars of the US electric car manufacturer who came on German roads. In January, the Tesla new registrations had already declined by almost 60 percent compared to the same month, and even over the entire year 2024, no brand had lost as much as Tesla.
Is Musk’s commitment to Trump an image problem for Tesla?
Experts recently explained the weakness of the car maker with an image problem, among other things, which also decreases on a majority owner Musk and his political commitment. Musk supports US President Donald Trump. Another reason for buying buying could be that possible customers were waiting for the introduction of the revised Model Y.
The paragraph of battery -operated cars (BEV) increased across all brands by 30.8 percent to 35,949 cars compared to February 2024. Experts had expected a plus at the beginning of the year because manufacturers moved BEV new approvals from 2024 into 2025. In this way, at the beginning of the year, they want to get better at the beginning of the annual CO2 fleet limit values, according to which manufacturers have to pay a penalty for too much exposed CO2.
Another reason should be a low level of previous year after promoting electric cars surprisingly leaked at the end of 2023.
In total, 203,434 cars were re -approved across all drives and segments. That was 6.4 percent less than a year ago. In January there was already a decline of 2.8 percent.
