Billions of assets mostly belong to men

The Equal Pay Day should draw attention to the wage gap between men and women. But assets are also unevenly distributed in Germany – especially under super rich.

According to an evaluation, assets in Germany are even more unequaled between the sexes than in the total population. The greatest private assets are 71 percent in male hands, the development organization Oxfam and the network of tax justice to the Equal Pay Day said tomorrow. Only 29 percent of German billion dollars belonged. That is therefore 201 billion of a total of 695 billion euros.

“For comparison: women have about 43 percent of total net assets in Germany,” it said. The comparative value is based on data from the socio -economic panel (SOEP) of DIW Berlin from 2017.

Oxfam: A lot of money for men means a lot of power for men

“The high billion dollar assets in the hands of fewer men go hand in hand with great political and social power power,” said Pia Schwertner from Oxfam. “This concentration of power is not only a problem for democracy, but also leads to the inequality between the sexes as a whole.”

The basis of the survey is the 249 German assets listed by “Manager Magazin” last year of over one billion euros. These were primarily based on entrepreneurial assets. The data on the ownership of the individual companies had “been researched from publicly accessible data, in particular register data and annual reports”.
