The letter quantities shrink in the digital age, the post moans over high costs. Now the logistician shortens his personnel costs – is that just the beginning of a job clearing?
According to the works council, the logistician could cut further jobs this year after the announcement of a job cut at Deutsche Post. “We fear that this will only be the top of the iceberg and that further thousands of jobs will be eliminated,” said the chairman of the overall works council of Deutsche Post AG, Thomas Held, the dpa in Bonn.
That could happen this year. These are jobs that are subject to social security and collective bargaining. Previously, the management had announced that it would reduce 8,000 jobs by the end of the year and justified this at high costs. Works council boss Held, who also sits on the Supervisory Board of the Bonn Group, called this announcement “totally frightening”. At the end of 2024, Post had 187,000 employees in Germany.
The fear that the 8,000 “are only the beginning” and that there could soon be another extensive job reduction is based on works council Held with a legislative reform, which according to the mail is released from VAT. So far, this tax advantage has only had the post as a so -called universal service provider, which has to carry letters all over Germany. The competitors who only work do not have to.
He appeals to the federal government to end the “unfair price competition” initiated by the reform and to grant the old tax advantage again, after all, as a universal service provider, it also has significantly more costs than the competition. It was only on Tuesday that the post office and the Verdi trade union agreed on a new collective agreement, according to which the fee will gradually increase by a total of five percent within two years.
The SPD criticized the post management. “This is a bitter blow for the employees and their families,” said Katja Mast, Member of the Bundestag. Post has a centuries of tradition. “The current announcement is all the harder to reduce thousands of bodies,” said the social democrat. “We are fighting for every job in Germany – that must also apply to the next government.”
Masts faction colleague Sebastian Roloff, who had a central role in the post-law reform, said it was clear that the post office had to position itself competitive. “That is why we created the framework conditions for the adequate financing of nationwide care in the postal law,” said the Social Democrat. “DHL will have to answer why this personnel reduction and how the high legal requirements should be met with fewer staff.” He hoped that the last dismantling announcement would be for a long time.
