Compared to the previous year, the work volume dropped in 2024. The number of part -time employees rose. There are fewer self -employed people for this.

In Germany, less has been worked for the first time since the Corona year 2020 last year. The working time volume of all employees decreased by 0.1 percent to 61.37 billion hours compared to the previous year, the Institute for Labor Market and Vocational Research (IAB) in Nuremberg said.

In contrast, the number of employed people – if only weakly – rose by 71,000 to 46.08 million. The increase is primarily due to part -time (+1.2 percent). The number of full -time employees has decreased – by 0.2 percent to 25.58 million people. The part -time quota is 39.5 percent and thus 0.3 percentage points higher than 2023. The decline in the self -employed was particularly strong – a decline was recorded by 1.9 percent to 3.77 million people.

On average, every employee worked 1332 hours in the past year – 3.5 hours less than a year earlier. The number of overtime also decreased. On average, each employee worked 13.1 and 15.1 unpaid overtime. That is 2.2 unpaid and 0.1 paid overtime less than 2023.
