VW reaches sales record – at the currywurst

It has been the best-selling product of the Volkswagen brand for years: the VW currywurst. And while the car heel weakens, the sausage rushes from record to record.

The car business is weakening, but VW 2024 was able to play a record again in a product: the VW currywurst sold almost never before. 8.552 million pieces were discontinued in canteens and supermarkets in 2024, as the works council announced in an article in the intranet, which is available to the German Press Agency. That was a good 200,000 more than in the previous record year 2023. A group spokeswoman confirmed the information.

“We celebrate a new sales record with over 8 million Volkswagen original curry sausages,” wrote HR board Gunnar Kilian on LinkedIn.

Almost as many sausages as cars

The group sold almost as many sausages as cars. In contrast to the sausage, the 2024 vehicle rate had shrunk by 2.3 percent, to 9.03 million models of all group brands. With the core brand VW, the sausage is even the best -selling product. In 2024, around 5.2 million cars and vans with VW logo faced the 8.5 million sausages.

The company attributes the record to new variants such as the hot dog sausage, which was released in 2021, which sold almost 2.18 million times last year. 6.317 million units were discontinued by the classic currywurst. In 2019 there had been seven million, 6.5 million in the Pandemie years 2020 and 2021. Kilian announced that further variants are to follow. “Our next currywurst coup is already in the works!”

Currywurst spell called former chancellor Schröder

The exile of the classic from a VW canteen in Wolfsburg had caused a stir nationwide in 2021. Above all, the reaction of former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder on the “Kraftriegel of the skilled worker and the skilled worker in the production” fueled a debate about meat consumption in companies. In 2023 VW raised the currywurst spell in the canteen in question. In the remaining more than 30 canteens and kiosks in the factory, the meat product had always remained on offer.

The VW currywurst was launched in 1973. It is also available in many supermarkets in Lower Saxony. It is manufactured in the butcher’s shop of the factory -owned Volkswagen Service Factory. VW even gave her its own part number: 199 398 500 A.
