The economy is in crisis, but people in Germany like to spend money on travel. Germany -tourism also booked strong numbers in January – and relies on the help of politics.

The boom in tourism in Germany lasts after the record year 2024. In January, hotels, inns, campsites and other accommodation companies recorded 25.9 million overnight stays and thus 3.1 percent more than in the same month, as the Federal Statistical Office announced. “That was the highest January since 2020 when there were 26.9 million overnight stays.”

While the number of overnight stays from guests from Germany rose by 4.2 percent to 21.6 million, there were a minus for visitors from abroad. Here the number of overnight stays fell by 1.9 percent to 4.3 million.

Record year despite the economic bravages

Despite the economic crisis, the tourism industry had a record year with a good 496 million overnight stays despite the economic crisis. That was a little more than in the previous record year 2019 before the outbreak of Corona pandemic, which had caused violent break-ins in tourism with Lockdowns.

Many people in Germany hold their money together according to the wave of inflation in recent years, but the Germans are traditionally exhausted.

Impulses by reducing VAT?

The tourism industry reports strong bookings for this year. At the same time, the German Tourism Association (DTV) welcomes the permanent reduction in VAT for dishes in the catering trade in the explosive paper of the Union and the SPD to seven percent. This is an important signal for the hospitality industry, said DTV President Reinhard Meyer. In addition, the Germany ticket must be continued as a “accelerator for tourism”. “We need a solution that holds the ticket affordable for everyone and improves the offer, especially in rural areas.”
