A regional outbreak of the mouth and claw disease made the export business of farmers across Germany. Now there is next progress.

After the occurrence of the mouth and claw disease (MKS) in Germany, another step towards normalization of trade has been reached. With the exception of a “contamination zone” around the outbreak of the outbreak in Brandenburg, the world organization for animal health was once again establishing the status of MKS-free for Germany, as the Federal Ministry of Agriculture announced.

Department chief Cem Özdemir (Greens) spoke of a “clear sign to our trading partners”. The official confirmation is a crucial basis for discussions with countries outside the EU and use export.

At the beginning of January, a MKS outbreak had occurred in Germany for the first time in more than 35 years. Some non-EU countries then imposed imports for meat and milk from all over the Federal Republic. In the EU, the principle of regionalization – products from outside the protection zone around the affected company can be traded normally.

Özdemir said: “I am confident that our trade relationships with the affected products of our agriculture all over the world will quickly normalize and our companies will soon be able to deliver again to their usual sales markets.”

According to the ministry, the suspension of the status’ as MKS-free and control measures are initially regarded for the area of the contamination zone in Brandenburg until April 11, 2025.
