Imports and exports were thus above the pre-crisis level. “With an increase of 25.5 percent in imports and an increase of 22.9 percent in exports, international trade is well above the comparison month of 2019 before the Corona crisis,” said Statistics Austria Director General Tobias Thomas.
In November 2021, goods worth 16.49 billion euros were imported and goods worth 15.73 billion euros were exported. This results in a deficit of EUR 0.76 billion in the trade balance.
The EU is the most important trading partner
The most important trading partner for Austria is still the EU, goods worth 10.97 billion euros were imported from the EU in November. In return, goods worth EUR 10.64 billion were exported to the EU. Compared to the same month last year, intra-EU imports rose by 18.6 percent and intra-EU exports by 18.5 percent. In trade with the EU, Austria has a deficit of EUR 0.33 billion.
From January to November 2021, imports increased by 22.4 percent compared to the same period last year (to 162.59 billion euros), and exports increased by 15.7 percent to 151.74 billion euros. The trade deficit widened significantly year-on-year from EUR 1.66 billion to EUR 10.86 billion.
Imports from Germany (plus 16 percent) and China (plus 29.0 percent) grew most clearly in the first eleven months of the year. In terms of exports, too, Germany continued to gain in importance for domestic foreign trade with a plus of 14.4 percent.
