Supermarket wants to give away foods to customers

Thousands of tons of food end up in the trash in supermarkets. Tesco tries something new in Great Britain – and wants to hand over certain products to customers for free.

Large amounts of food are thrown away every day, even though they are still edible. The large British supermarket chain Tesco wants to combat this waste and therefore tests a model that will certainly make many customers take notice. Foods that are on the basis of the best before the best before or are quickly perishable should simply be given away.

Many chains offer such products at discounted prices. After all, many foods are still good after the expiry date. At Tesco there should be the goods free of charge-at least temporarily and in some smaller express branches, British media report. The free products can then be recognized by a small yellow sticker, from 9:30 p.m. customers can look for it.

Tesco is still covered with the details

However, the first access to this has charity organizations and employees. A Tesco spokesman told the BBC: “This test enables customers to take all remaining yellow marked articles with them free of charge at the end of the day after we initially offered them charity organizations and colleagues.”

The big chains in the UK are all committed to the goal of halving food waste in their markets by 2030. Tesco wants to reach this brand this year – and according to the BBC, is the first company to give away food to its customers. However, Tesco has not yet to comment in which branches the test run takes place and when it starts.

In Germany, too, 14 companies in large and retail 2023 have closed a so-called pact against food waste with the Ministry of Food and Agriculture. In this country, around 290,000 tons of food waste are disposed of in retail. Up to this year, this number is to be reduced by half by 2030. Plans like Tesco have not yet been known.
