Ex-head of the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine arrested in absentia in the case of coal from Donbass

Former Minister of Energy of Ukraine Volodymyr Demchyshyn, who headed the department from 2014 to 2016, was arrested in absentia in a case of coal supplies from Donbass. This was reported on Monday, February 7, by the Ukrainian News agency.

“The Pechersky District Court of Kiev has chosen for the former Minister of Energy and Coal Industry Volodymyr Demchishin, who is suspected of assisting terrorist organizations in the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics, a measure of restraint in the form of detention in absentia,” the agency reports citing the Prosecutor General’s office.

It is noted that the decision of the court was made on January 5. First, the State Bureau of Investigation of Ukraine (SBI) summoned Demchyshyn to conduct investigative actions as part of the investigation of this case, but he did not appear at the appointed time. After that, the court decided to detain the ex-minister, and the State Bureau of Investigation put him on the international wanted list. Demchishin’s whereabouts are still unknown.

According to the investigation, from December 2014 to February 2015, the ex-minister issued a number of orders to appoint representatives of the self-proclaimed republics of Donbass to the positions of state-owned enterprises located in territories not controlled by Kiev. In addition, he allegedly forced the leaders of the state power generating company to conclude several coal supply agreements with representatives of the LPR and DPR.

The pre-trial investigation continues. The head of the political council of the Opposition Platform – For Life party Viktor Medvedchuk and ex-president of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko are also involved in the same case.
