Dispute over prices-Senseo coffee soon back on the shelves

In some shops there were recently striking gaps in the coffee shells. Customers will have to expect higher prices for some products in the future.

Instead of their favorite coffee, customers in the supermarket have recently found half -empty shelves. Well -known brands such as Senseo, Tassimo and Jacobs were not available in the meantime. From this week, however, they should be gradually available again, as the German press agency learned.

The background was long -lasting negotiations between the large retail chains such as Rewe and Edeka with the coffee group JDE PEE’s, which includes the brands. These have now been completed. This could have a noticeable effect for consumers, they may have to dig deeper into their pockets for one or the other affected article.

“In the interests of the customers, we had to accept an incomprehensible price increase. That is why we can speak less about an agreement, but rather of a forced peace,” it said from Edeka corporate circles.

Rewe: “Coffee is available”

A spokesman for JDE PEET’s said that they had now agreed with all trading partners. “The prices for raw coffee have doubled since last year.” This is primarily due to the extreme weather conditions in the most important coffee growing countries. According to its own statements, the group tries to pass on only part of the cost increases.

In some supermarkets, customers had recently been informed about signs on the coffee shelf. “The articles of the manufacturer Jacobs (Senseo) are currently not available. We ask for your understanding,” was read. After the products had been sold, retailers had initially received no new goods due to the ongoing negotiations. Now it should be delivered again.

A Rewe spokesman said: “The availability of goods with coffee is secured and we will also see no reason to assume that there will be a reduced availability over coffee for our customers.” The discounter Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd did not want to comment.

Coffee much more expensive than 2020

The price for Arabica beans traded on the raw material exchange had been climbed to the highest value in November for decades. Industry experts then announced that coffee could become more expensive. The coffee dealer Tchibo announced in February to increase its prices – by 50 cents up to 1 euro per pound.

Consumers’ coffee prices have already increased significantly in recent years. In 2024, coffee pads and capsules cost almost 25 percent more than four years earlier, bean coffee almost 23 percent. This is shown by figures from the Federal Statistical Office.
