The eggs are currently scarce in the United States. Despite the trade conflict, the Americans therefore use unusual means. Also in Germany.
The United States also asked for more egg exports in Germany. “In fact, we received an inquiry from the USA,” a spokesman for the Federal Association of Egg. The association, which represents egg economy in this country, initially left further details.
The background: After the outbreaks of bird flu, eggs in the USA are scarce and expensive. As it became known last week, US authorities have already asked for more exports from chicken eggs in other European countries. According to media reports, corresponding inquiries had been received by industry associations in Denmark and Sweden. Because of the plans of US President Donald Trump to buy Greenland, the relationship with Denmark and the United States is currently tense.
According to previous information from the President of the Federal Association EI, Hans-Peter Goldnick, small quantities are already exported to the USA about the Spotmarkt. The volume is very low. Because even Germany is in abundance: only 73 percent of the eggs used in the Republic were produced in 2023 in this country. The rest is imported.
Bird flu has left traces
The most recent outbreak of bird flu is responsible for the egg shortage in the United States – and the increased prices. The H5N1 virus is currently widespread for wild birds all over the world. In the United States, the pathogen led to outbreaks in poultry and milk companies. In order to contain the plague, numerous laying hens were culled.
A confirmation of the US government for the various inquiries about eggs in Europe was initially not available.
