The year 2025 has started comparatively well for inns, restaurants and hotels. However, the monthly balance sheet is not flawless.

Germany’s innkeepers and hoteliers gave price increases higher sales in January than a year earlier. The revenues were nominal by 3.9 percent above the level of January 2024, as the Federal Statistical Office announced on the basis of preliminary figures. Adjusted for price increases (real), however, a minus of 0.3 percent in the books.

From December 2024 to January 2025, the proceeds, according to the Wiesbaden statisticians, rose both real (plus 2.7 percent) and nominal (plus 2.5 percent).

Sales level of the pre-corona period not yet reached

The hospitality industry in Germany had completed the entire year 2024 with a real sales of 2.6 percent. Because prices for drinks, food or overnight stays were increased, the industry managed to increase its nominal sales by 0.6 percent compared to the previous year. However, the hospitality has not yet reached the sales level of the time before Corona pandemic.

During the pandemic, the federal government had temporarily supported the hospitality industry with a reduced VAT rate. Since January 1, 2024, the regular VAT rate of 19 percent has again been in effect for food in the catering trade, which often results in higher prices for customers.
