For many people, nothing works before a cup of coffee in the morning. The price for it is now rising for the second time within a short period of time – for the first time at one of the industry leaders.

The leading German coffee roaster Tchibo is raising coffee prices for the second time in nine months. Depending on the variety and country of origin, sales prices are expected to rise between 50 cents and 1.30 euros per pound by February 21, the company announced on Monday in Hamburg.

Tchibo is considered to be one of the most important pacesetters for retail prices. The coffee roaster and retailer last raised prices in mid-June after previous price cuts. That was the first price increase in more than four years.

Even then, the background was higher purchase prices on the world markets. They have continued to rise sharply since then. “We hesitated for a long time, but green coffee prices have risen by 50 percent since last summer. We are taking this development into account and are now adjusting our sales prices, »said Tchibo spokesman Arnd Liedtke. Tchibo assured that the sales prices would fall again “as soon as the green coffee prices allow it”.
