Billions flowed into German start-ups in recent years. The proportion of environmental technology is higher than in other countries. And by changing power in the USA, experts see new opportunities.

According to a study, every fourth euro that has been invested in a start-up from Germany in the past five years has flowed to a founding company in the field of environmental technology (“GreenCH”). “Germany is a pioneer here,” says the “Greentech Monitor 2025”, which was published in Berlin by the German Startup Association. The proportion is significantly higher than in Great Britain (18 percent) or in the United States (12 percent).

“At Greentech we are at the forefront internationally. Now we have to expand this lead,” said Helmut Schönenberger, board member of the startup association. The planned additional 100 billion euros for climate protection from the loosening of the debt brake should flow into innovative solutions in order to secure the top position of the German start-up scene in the sustainability area.

New opportunities by turning in the USA

According to the association, new opportunities also result from the turn in US economic policy under President Donald Trump. The government of Trump’s predecessor Joe Biden had launched the largest climate investment package in American history with the so -called inflation reduction act. While Trump is now traveling to the program, Germany and Europe can again take on a leadership role in the Greentech area. “Climatetech founders from all over the world are already orienting themselves to Europe to further develop and scale their sustainable innovations.”

Energy top consumption flop

In the past five years, Greentech start-ups in Germany have received total financial injections of 11.7 billion euros. The energy sector has experienced a special dynamic: 26 percent of the Greenentech founders are active in this area, followed by the industry and software industries.

“The areas of software and industry also show positive trends and grow,” the report continues. However, other sectors would have to struggle with problems: The areas of consumer goods and food have recently developed negatively – here the generally cloudy consumption mood has led to challenges. After many major financing, the area of mobility has had more difficult. “This is particularly problematic for Germany as a (previously) strong car location.”
