Germany’s third largest Landesbank exceeded the maximum mark of 2023 when the input tax gain. A recent business is also better.

The Landesbank Hessen-Thuringia has achieved a record gain for the third time in a row and is aiming for a comparable result for 2025. Despite the enormous economic and geopolitical challenges, the Helaba expect to have an input tax only slightly below the previous year, said CEO Thomas Groß in Frankfurt. “In the medium term, we unchanged a result of sustainably over one billion euros.”

Last year, Germany’s third largest Landesbank, with 767 million euros before taxes, exceeded the previous record from 2023 by 6.3 percent. The surplus increased from 466 million euros to 526 million euros within a year.

Less risks in the real estate market

After a significant damper in the balance sheet ensured in 2023 turbulence in the market for commercial properties, the Helaba management now reports on stabilizing the real estate market, especially in commercial segments. Because fewer office space is used due to the home office trend, the market for these properties in many countries was under pressure.

In the Helaba record for 2024, the result improved by almost 40 percent to 289 million euros. The reasons: depreciation that had burdened the previous year’s result fell away and real estate stocks again gained value. For possible credit cases, the Helaba also covered a fifth less than a year earlier (448 million euros) with 351 million euros.

The Helaba, the service providers for savings banks in Hesse, Thuringia, North Rhine-Westphalia and Brandenburg, was able to significantly increase its commission surplus: by 7.9 percent to 578 million euros.
