Soft drinks from the can are in demand, especially for younger ones. The amount sold has recently risen rapidly. A market researcher explains why.

Alcohol -free drinks from the can enjoy increasing popularity among consumers in Germany. The total volume sold has increased by almost 47 percent to more than one million tons in the past five years, as data from the NIQ market researcher show.

The numbers refer to sales in the food trade, in drugstores, drinks pick -up markets and petrol stations, without a kiosks. There are refreshment drinks such as cola, lemonades, energy drinks, juice spritzer and icedeas.

There is a real can boom, says NiQ consumption expert Petra Ossendorf. “They are particularly in demand by younger people and hyped by social media.

Many brands therefore expand their portfolio with a can. “It also justifies the trend with the fact that cans can be used practical and well on the go.” The new solid lids on the PET bottles seem to interfere with many consumers, and therefore doses could be a good alternative. “

More than 70 percent of sales with energy drinks

According to NIQ, the dealers were able to significantly increase their sales with soft drinks from the can. Between February 2020 and February 2025, these grew by two thirds to 3.23 billion euros. More than 70 percent of them are eliminated on energy drinks. The “food newspaper” had previously reported.

The number of doses sold had broken into the start of the 2003 can deposit. After the introduction of the uniform pledge system in 2006, however, it went up again. The cans have always been controversial.

Environmentalists criticize the high energy consumption in aluminum production. Ossendorf says: “On the part of the manufacturers, the opinion has now established itself that the environmental balance is not that bad. The material can be reused.”
