From the Leyen: New US tariffs will meet the pharmaceutical industry

According to the EU Commission, the decision for further new US tariffs was made. The president calls the affected industries and turns to Donald Trump again.

According to EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, the United States will also raise special tariffs on the import of semiconductors, pharmaceuticals and wood.

In addition, a further announcement on so -called reciprocal tariffs, with which alleged unfair tariffs of other countries are to be reacted to all Wednesday, was expected to be responded to this Wednesday, said the top German politician in a speech in the European Parliament in Strasbourg. These would immediately apply to almost all of the goods and many countries in the world and come to the special tariffs that US President Donald Trump has already put into force. Imports of steel, aluminum, cars and car parts to the USA are affected by the latter.

In the speech, the Leyen again warned of the consequences of a possible trade war and emphasized the EU’s willingness to negotiate. “Customs are taxes that are paid by the people. Customs are taxes on their food and medication for people in America,” she said. Overcapacities, imbalances, unfair subsidies, the foreclosure of markets and the theft of intellectual property are also problematic for EU. General tariffs made things worse and not better. These would cost jobs and create a “bureaucratic monster” of new customs procedures.

At the same time, von der Leyen made it clear that the EU will react with countermeasures in the event of inadequate willingness to negotiate the United States. “I have already exchanged ideas about the next steps with the European heads of state and government,” she said. “Our goal is a negotiating solution. But if necessary, we will of course protect our interests, our population and our companies.” You don’t necessarily want to hit back, but if it is necessary, you have a strong plan to do this.

Details did not give the Leyen. According to information from commission circles, it includes, among other things, the introduction of far -reaching counter -tariffs. In addition, taxes on digital services could also be collected in the EU.
