EU Commission wants to defuse climate rules for car manufacturers

EU Commission President of the Leyen had already announced the project, now there is a written proposal. Car producers should have more time to comply with EU climate rules.
In view of the impending CO2 penalties, the EU Commission wants to give car builders more time to meet climate rules. Instead of annual compliance with the limit values, companies should have three years, the authority said in Brussels. A majority must agree to a change in the regulation among the EU countries and in the European Parliament.
When the project announced, the Leyen promised that this would not mean a step backwards in climate protection. “We have to stick to the agreed goals,” she said. The measure now proposed is intended to enable an average value of the CO2 goals for the years 2025, 2026 and 2027.
The background of the impending punishment for the already battered industry is the so -called fleet limit values. At the beginning of the year, these legal requirements tightened. An average of the CO2 emissions of the cars manufactured is measured.
On average of all vehicles approved in the EU in one year, this limit must not be exceeded. By 2035 it should gradually drop to zero grams of CO2.
MEP: don’t make Musk even richer
The manufacturers have to pay punishment for too much CO2. Because sales for electric cars have not developed as well as forecasting it before, car manufacturers could exceed the limit values. Manufacturers could also avoid punishment, for example by paying other manufacturers – overfilling the goals – and forming a joint pool with them.
But that should be well paid for manufacturers who cede emissions rights. In case of doubt, money would be rinsed in the coffers in Europe’s competition, as the CDU member Peter Liese noted: “We want to receive the climate goals, but not to make Elon Musk even more enriched by European legislation,” he said with a view to the Tesla boss and US billionaire.
Changes in the urgent procedure?
Michael Bloss feared that in addition to adapting the CO2 penalties, other aspects of the law could also be changed – which the Greens and the SPD specialist politicians reject. According to the SPD European MP Tiemo Wölken, the discussion is to decide on the changes in the urgent procedure. He said that he could make friends with this idea if it was certain that only the regulation for the punishments and for the time being no further aspects are changed.
