However, the industry also grew compared to years without a pandemic; improved 7.1% against 2019 and 0.3% against 2018.
“While the entire industry recovered in 2021, there were some sectors where we had the best year in a long time, or even record. The production of agricultural machinery was the best of the 21st century, that of food the best since 2015 and that of bricks was a historical record“explained the Minister of Productive Development, Matías Kulfas.
In December, the Industrial Production Index (IPI) increased 0.6% compared to November and exceeded all previous December records against which it can be compared, according to the information available in INDEC. In parallel, the activity was 11.5% higher than that of February 2020, prior to the arrival of the coronavirus.
In the last month of the year, 15 of the 16 industrial items produced more than in the same month of 2019; the highest growth was observed in Automotive (+67.9%), Machinery and equipment (+47.7%), Other transport equipment (+47%), Clothing, leather and footwear (+39.4%) and Other equipment, devices and instruments (+35.9%). The only segment that was below the level of two years ago was Oil refining.
It is worth remembering that the industry had fallen 7.5% in 2020; -6.3% in 2019 and 5% in 2018. Due to the reactivation of production, today the sector has 48,000 more jobs than at the end of 2019.
“All these improvements are not the result of chance, but the product of recovering productive policies, such as accessible credit, the development of national suppliers and the promotion of industrial parks, among many other initiatives. In fact, credit in pesos to companies reached the highest level since 2018. SMEs were prioritized: today they account for 52% of credit to companies, a historical record,” Kulfas deepened.
