The usage fee for trucks on the German long -distance streets is also an important source of income for investments. After an expansion, it bubbles more, but not as strong as hoped.
The weak economy also strikes the income from the truck toll. Last year 12.96 billion euros came in, as can be seen from the Federal Government’s information. Accordingly, this was significantly below the expected 15.1 billion euros due to the deteriorated economic situation. The mileage was a tenth below the expectations. The forecasts for further development remained with uncertainties.
More income from toll expansion
The usage fee for heavy trucks on the German motorways and federal highways had been expanded last year. Since July 1, it also applies to smaller vans with more than 3.5 tons instead of just 7.5 tons. A new CO2 surcharge was added on December 1, 2023. The toll revenue generally increases significantly after 7.4 billion euros had come to the federal treasury in 2023.
The use of the funds after deduction of costs was also regulated. Half of the income is also used for improvements to improve the federal roads – the rest according to the law “for measures from the field of mobility and mostly for measures from the field of federal rail paths”.
Debate about revenue division
It is also an issue for the ongoing coalition negotiations of the Union and SPD. In a paper of the specialist politicians it says that in general “closed financing cycles” should be introduced – income should benefit the respective mode of transport.
