The food dealer Kaufland is criticized: in several branches there should be reports of hygiene problems. Now the company is drawing further consequences.

According to reports on hygiene problems, Kaufland temporarily closed two markets. “We saw two frightening branches. One was called Homburg, the other was called Bad Tölz,” said the head of Kaufland Germany, Jochen Kratz, the “Bild” newspaper. The company also announced that in the coming weeks, all branches in this country in Germany and exchanged cooling devices.

The “Stern” and the RTL show “Team Wallraff had accused the retail chain of hygiene and food safety. The reporters partially examined 50 branches for the research. In the market in the Upper Bavarian Bad Tölz, employees are said to have had, among other things, at the freshness date with the durability date of goods. A spokeswoman had granted a “pest infestation”.

Complete renovation in Homburg

According to the Kaufland boss, the branch in Homburg was immediately closed. “We are now doing the originally planned renovation in the double -digit million range during the closing time,” said Kratz. What could be seen there will no longer exist. The workforce and works council were informed. The approximately 100 employees are paid for during the work. The market is scheduled to open again in five to six months.

There have already been extensive training in the market in Bad Tölz. “For security reasons, we also decided to close the affected branch for a week again,” said Kratz. This decision was made today. All processes and conditions should be thoroughly checked. “We shoot everything from left to right and from right to left”. The exact period of the closure has so far been open.

Controls and external experts

The company had already announced that personnel consequences were drawn in the two markets and that a new leadership was in action. “Our customers rightly expect the highest standards in cleanliness and hygiene,” said Kratz. Nevertheless, there were violations. External experts should therefore also be included in the processing. “Together with you, we will extensively examine our processes, training systems and control mechanisms-I call it a quality TÜV for our processes.”

Kaufland has its headquarters in Neckarsulm in northern Baden-Württemberg. According to its own statements, the supermarket chain has more than 770 branches and over 90,000 employees in Germany. Like the discounter Lidl, Kaufland is a subsidiary of the Schwarz Group.
