Party friend about Trump-Zölle: political “bloodbath” possible
Trump’s customs package could be expensive for his Republicans in the next elections, says party colleague Ted Cruz. It is also crucial how other countries behave now.
According to the Republican Senator Ted Cruz, the customs package announced by US President Donald Trump could have serious consequences for the Republicans. “If we should get into a recession – especially in a severe – then in 2026 at all likelihood it would become a political bloodbath,” said the Senator from the state of Texas in his podcast “Verdict”. He is actually not part of the Trump-critical camp in the party.
In his opinion, a loss of the majority in the House of Representatives threatens in the event of an economic downturn – possibly even in the Senate. The Republicans currently hold a narrow majority in both parliamentary chambers. In November 2026, the next congress elections are scheduled in the United States. All seats in the House of Representatives and around a third of the seats are re -awarded in the Senate.
“I’m not a fan of tariffs”
Cruz said that because of the customs package, this week could go into the history of Trump’s second term in all four years. There is “the potential for positive developments” but also for “enormous risks”.
One possible positive scenario is that other countries return to the negotiating table due to Trump’s announcement, they agree and they would significantly reduce their tariffs on US goods. “That could happen,” said Cruz. In such a case, he would “break out in enthusiasm”.
But there is also another option: Other states could react to US products with their own higher tariffs-while Trump’s tariffs remained. This too is “a very real risk” and would be “terrible for America”. He himself is “not a fan of tariffs”.
