Rewe and Penny made changes in their apps. Customers now have to spend significantly more money to get the same discounts. The chains defend the procedure.
From now on, users of the Bonus Programs of the Supermarket Chain Rewe and the discounter Penny have to buy more to secure extra discounts. The hurdles were significantly applied.
Customers receive a discount coupon via the apps of the retail chains if they come to a certain purchase value within one month. Instead of 50 as before, you will have to spend 100 euros in the future to unlock a 3 percent coupon for the following month. The hurdle for a 5 percent discount rose from 150 to 250 euros, which for 10 percent from 400 to 500 euros. The threshold values were also increased in the Penny app. The “supermarket blog” had previously reported.
The Rewe group defended the procedure. “From the beginning we made it clear that Rewe Bonus is continuously developed and optimized,” said a spokesman. This included new functions and changed advantage mechanisms. Since March, users could choose between four desired coupons every week and collect further credit when buying all products from the corresponding brand. According to the company, there are also new coupons at Penny.
The Rewe Group had got out of the Payback bonus program at the turn of the year and had set up its own advantage programs for the Rewe supermarket chain and the discounter daughter Penny. In the apps, customers receive additional discounts and advantages if they register. Other food dealers also offer something like this.
