Coffee prices have risen sharply since the turn of the year

Difficult times for coffee drinkers: You often have to pay significantly more when shopping than a few months ago.

A look at the price tags on the coffee shelf should not trigger enthusiasm for customers of supermarkets and discounters these days. Many articles have become significantly more expensive in recent months, as an evaluation of the SMHaggle price comparison is shown for the German Press Agency.

The shelf prices for ground coffee or coffee pads from Jacobs, Mövenpick, Melitta or Senseo are therefore 9 to 33 percent higher than at the turn of the year. With coffee beans of these brands, it is even up to 43 percent. The cheaper own brands of food traders such as “Barissimo”, “Bellarom”, “Gut & cheap” or “yes” cost 28 to 30 percent more than in early January.

When asked about the reasons, dealers and experts refer to the increased raw material prices. The cause is drought and poor harvest forecasts, especially in the most important producer country of Brazil. Tchibo had also increased its prizes in February – depending on the variety between 50 cents and 1 euro per pound.

Coffee has become more expensive for supermarkets and discounters in recent years. At the beginning of 2022 there was the cheapest 500 gram pack of meal coffee from the own brands for 2.99 euros. In the meantime, 5.49 euros are due and almost 84 percent more. Comparable products from brand manufacturers such as Melitta or Jacobs are currently offered for 9.29 euros and thus cost up to 47 percent more than at that time.

The shelf prices of the products are usually largely identical to the various retail chains, according to SMHaggle. The key date for the price comparison was April 7th.
