Islands are cut off from the outside world, tourists get stuck at airports or cannot even arrive, there are demonstrations nationwide: the Greeks demand more wages and salary.
Nationwide strikes are lame in Greece. The large union associations of the private sector and the public service called for the outstanding on Wednesday. They demand strong wage increases – Greece is one of the final lights in real wages and purchasing power in the EU. The striking also hits tourists: the ferries remain in the ports, and there are also no home and abroad flights because the air traffic controllers take part in the strikes.
Particularly annoying for tourists
One and a half weeks before the Greek Easter, which falls on the same Sunday as German Easter this year and marks the start of the tourism season, the strikes are particularly annoying for travelers. Many tourists had to rebook their flights, got stuck on islands or at airports or could not even travel as planned.
Above all, the strike of the air traffic controllers caused criticism, which was to be legally prohibited due to the beginning of the season. In the late Tuesday evening, a judge declared the strike legal. Airports and airlines had long since canceled all flights.
The upswing does not arrive at humans
Economically, Greece is now quite good after the years of financial crisis. The international monetary fund recently praised the country’s progress, which is currently far ahead with economic growth of over 2 percent in the EU comparison. However, the financial guards warn that strong wage increases in particular could drive inflation. The government is in a dilemma: it is economically uphill, but progress is far from being received by people.
