The US President keeps the world – and the stock exchanges – with great hesitation in trade policy. How does he explain his youngest volte?
US President Donald Trump founded his swivel in the international tariffs with the nervousness of others. The “people” have become a bit restless and “a bit fearful”, Trump said at an event in front of the White House when asked about his motivations for the recent change of course in trading policy. “You have to be flexible.”
Trump had previously thrown back in the international trade conflict in the face of great turbulence on the stock exchanges and had only just been exposed to tariffs for 90 days. Trump wrote on the Truth Social platform that he ordered a 90-day break and during this period a reduced customs duty grabs ten percent. However, this does not explicitly apply to China: for Chinese imports, Trump rather raised the duty. After the announcement, the stock exchanges went up significantly.
At his appearance at the White House, the US President said that the markets had quickly brightened up again after a somewhat dark mood. “It is said that it was the biggest day in financial history.” Trump said that it was a transition period for the previous turbulence on the financial markets due to his customs policy. “It is a transition to greatness.”
Trump also argued: “The big step is not what I did today.” The big step was to introduce the tariffs in the first place to tackle the inequalities in the trade in many other countries. “That requires courage.” No other president did that, although it was necessary.
