For many supermarket customers, dairy products are part of shopping. Not all products were more in demand. Did the price play a role?

The people in Germany saved something with butter last year, but ate more cheese. Compared to 2023, the computational per capita consumption of cheese products rose by a kilogram to 25.4 kilograms, as the Federal Agency for Agriculture and Food announced. The domestic cheese production grew from 2.66 million tons to 2.74 million tons.

One package less

In the case of butter, the per capita consumption fell into a computational by a 250 gram parcel to 5.3 kilograms. According to the preliminary figures, the production quantity of butter, milk fat and milk strokes fades decreased slightly to 473,400 tons. Around five kilograms of milk are needed for the production of a packet of butter, as it was explained.

There had been a strong increase in price for butter last year. The cheapest packet of German brand butter cost 2.39 euros in October – more than ever. According to experts, the reasons were smaller amounts of milk that were delivered by farmers and a lower fat content in raw milk. Butter prices have been falling again since the beginning of February.

Farmers delivered less to dairies

Milk deliveries in the dairies fell by 118,000 tons to 31.3 million tons in 2024, as can be seen from the data of the Federal Information Center Agriculture. The blue -decay disease also had an impact in cows. The production of consumer milk fell to 4.1 million tons for the fourth time in a row. The per capita consumption remained constant at 46.2 kilos.

Farmers received 48.14 cents per kilogram of conventionally generated milk and almost 3 cents more than 2023. There were 58.03 cents per kilo for biomilch. The number of dairy cows decreased by 123,000 to almost 3.6 million animals. The number of companies fell by 3.8 percent to 48,649.
