Demand is not increasing not only at pizza. However, Boom Flacht, who has been sparked slightly in recent years.
In Germany, more frozen food is consumed than ever before. In 2024, the average per capita consumption rose by 600 grams to 50 kilograms, as the German Tief cooling institute announced. The demand is high, said YouGov consumption researcher Martin Weiß. This underlines the ongoing importance of frozen products in everyday life of consumers. “Almost every household still buys TK products.”
The frozen industry has been enjoying increasing sales since 2021. After a break -in at the beginning of the pandemic, the manufacturers – favored by the high inflation – achieved double -digit growth and new record values for per capita consumption for several years in a row. In 2020 it was still at just under 45 kilos per citizen.
Even as a result of the strong growth, the boom 2024 is at least slightly flattened. The manufacturers could no longer grow as clearly as in previous years. The sales volume climbed by 2.3 percent to 4.14 million tons. Sales rose nominal by 2.7 percent to 22.6 billion euros and was therefore only a little higher than increasing food prices.
Greater demand for fries, fish and fruit
Around half of sales and sales were in 2024 to the out-of-house market, which includes restaurants, cafés and community catering in daycare centers or old people’s homes.
The rest is distributed over supermarkets, discounters and home services such as bofrost that sell frozen food to customers. The frozen pizza is still the most popular product in the food trade industry. In 2024, more than 395,000 tons were discontinued. That was 4.5 percent more than in the previous year.
Demand also increased for other product groups, for example with fries fries or other potato products, fish, fruit as well as bread and rolls. Vegetables, cakes and tarts as well as raw meat were bought less frequently. Customers only increased more often in the event of poultry. Cycling ice is not included in the association’s numbers.

“Many people are heavily burdened in their everyday life and want meals to be prepared easily and easily, which they support mobile everyday life in their employees with a full schedule,” said the managing director of the German Civil Court Institute, Sabine Eichner. Especially when children lived in the household, time and strength are often missing to make fresh meals every day.
According to the association, frozen foods have been available in Germany for 70 years. At the food fair Anuga in Cologne in 1955, freely cooled products from manufacturers were first presented. The first articles included frozen spinach and frozen vegetables.
