Only one topic is currently dominating at international meetings: the wave of tariffs and countermeasures started by US President Donald Trump. As reported, Trump prescribed 125 percent inch on Chinese imported goods on Wednesday. With the 20 percent customs surcharge in March, it is even 145 percent. The USA has long exploited China, complained Trump, but one would be happy about an agreement.
This does not seem in sight: Beijing countered on Friday and wants to raise 125 percent inches to US imports from April 12th. The United States is “blackmailed” and if it has to be, you will “fight until the end”. China’s countermeasures are also likely to pain: Agriculture is particularly hard in the United States, which previously supplied large amounts of soy, corn and meat to China. These products are hardly competitive with the new tariffs.
The exchange of China’s President Xi Jinping and the Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who was received in the People’s Republic on Friday, was friendly. There are no winners in a trade war, said XI and appealed to the EU to work together to protect the international trade system. Spain sees China as a partner of the EU, said Sanchez.
