EU shifts against tariffs to US products to mid-July

Last week, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced it, now the corresponding legal texts have been published: First EU countermeasures on US tariffs are initially on hold.

In the trade conflict with the United States, the EU exposed the application of planned special tariffs to US products by July 14th. With the corresponding publication in the EU-Amtsblatt, the EU is implementing an announcement by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. She had announced last week that the measure intended for mid -April should be suspended for around three months.

The shift is a reaction to the action of US President Donald Trump: After great turbulence on the stock and financial markets, he surprisingly decided to grant a break from certain tariffs for 90 days. This breathing space is now to be used for negotiations.

As the EU Commission announced, the EU Commissioner Maros Sefcovic, which is responsible for trade, is currently in the United States, “to explore the ground for a negotiation solution at meetings with its US colleagues”. If the talks are not satisfactory, the EU will take countermeasures.
