The Germans invested more than seven billion euros in their pets last year. The total turnover of the German pet industry was supported by a plus in cat food. This was announced by the Central Association of Zoological Specialists (ZZF) and the industrial association pet needs (IVH) in Berlin.
“Overall, the pet requirement market continued to develop stable,” said IVH chairman Georg Müller. Despite the tense economic situation, the level of sales of previous years could be held. In 2023, total sales were 6.8 billion euros. Since the data for home food for 2024 has been determined on the basis of a new database, but both years can only be compared to a limited extent.
According to Müller, the sales with ready -made food moved slightly below the inflation rate. The greatest increase in cat food with a total turnover of 2.3 billion euros was in stationary trade alone – an increase of 3.5 percent. In the case of dog food, on the other hand, there is a small minus in the classic sales channels. The total turnover was 1.8 billion euros.
Fewer accessories for pets
According to the associations, almost 34 million dogs, cats, small mammals and ornamental birds lived in German households in 2024. There would also be numerous ornamental fish and terrarium animals. The number one pet was therefore the cat with a total of 15.9 million animals. 10.5 million dogs follow in second place. At least one pet lived in 44 percent of households.
Pet owners bought fewer demands and accessories for their animals. The reason is the tense financial situation, said ZZF President Norbert Holthenrich. Inpatient retail sales decreased by 0.6 percent to 1.1 billion euros.
