Internationally, the Chinese car manufacturers are increasingly strong competition for the Germans. Your cars are still very rare in this country.
There are very few cars from Chinese brands in Germany. As of January 1, they only made 0.1 to 0.2 percent of the car population in the Federal Republic, as an evaluation of figures from the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) showed by the dpa. And so far they have also played only a very low role in the new registrations.
In the KBA’s quarterly inventory statistics, on January 1, 2025, there are exactly 70,046 cars that can be assigned to Chinese brands in the narrower sense – of a total of 49.3 million cars in Germany. The concentration on electric cars is striking: they make up around 72 percent of the inventory.
By far the largest chunk is omitted at 49,557 on MG Roewe. It is only by far the Lynk and Great Wall Motor (GWM), each with a little more than 6,000 cars and BYD with a good 4,500. NIO comes to 1,700, Aiways, Xpeng, Leap motor and Maxus are in the hundred area. In addition, there are still some brands with small quantities that the KBA does not show individually.
Most of the Chinese brands in the narrower sense – for example without the Swedish make Volvo adopted by Geely – have only recently been on the German market. It is growing, albeit slowly. This is also due to the fact that they recently only made up around one percent in the new registrations.
