Donald Trump is threatened with tariffs on medical devices. Now the Swiss Pharmariese Roche wants to significantly expand its commitment in the United States. New locations and thousands of jobs are to be created there.
The Swiss pharmaceutical company Roche is investing $ 50 billion (around 43.4 billion euros) in the USA over the next five years. The money should flow into new research and development locations as well as in existing and new production facilities in several US states, the group said. A total of up to 12,000 new jobs would be created – around 1,000 at Roche and another 11,000 to support the new US production capacities, it said.
The group underlines its 110-year commitment in the United States, said CEO Thomas Schinecker. Roche already has a significant presence in the United States with more than 25,000 employees, 15 research and development centers and 13 production locations. As soon as all new and expanded production capacities have been put into operation, Roche will export more medication from the USA than import.
The step follows after US President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened high tariffs on medical devices. Just a few days ago, the Swiss pharmaceutical company Novartis announced investments of $ 23 billion in the United States.
