An investigation by the Frankfurt public prosecutor’s office shows how comprehensive the diesel emissions scandal was. It has achieved losses and gain skipping against international manufacturers.
In the scandal around manipulated diesel emissions systems, the judiciary imposed a million drop against another car manufacturer. After Opel, the Korean company Hyundai also had to pay 58.5 million euros, reports the Frankfurt public prosecutor.
In addition to a punishment, this penalty, which was already imposed last year, is also skimmed down illegally. The Koreans had sold around 90,000 cars with manipulated exhaust systems under their Hyundai and Kia brands in Germany. Hessische Rundfunk had previously reported.
Opel had already had to pay a fine of 64.8 million euros in 2021. A procedure against the Fiat brand, which has now risen like Opel in the Stellantis Group, is still open. At the Japanese car manufacturer Suzuki, the Hessian judiciary skimmed 6.5 million euros in profit. She is responsible because the manufacturers mentioned have their headquarters or their Germany seat in Hesse.
Like Opel, Hyundai also shows an intention to fraud. A spokesman for the German Hyundai headquarters in Offenbach emphasizes: “The public prosecutor has not determined a deliberate or fraudulent behavior.” It is about older diesel models that are no longer made. According to justice, the investigators have determined misconduct by leading managers who have held their supervision poor. The company itself cooperated with the investigators.
