Boeing has been flying from one loss to the next for years. It looks better this year. But Donald Trump’s China-Zölle are a problem.
In its permanent crisis, the Boeing aircraft manufacturer wins some ground under their feet. Also because aircraft production put on, the group burned less money than expected in the first quarter. In addition, Boeing boss Kelly Ortberg was confident on Wednesday to bring the production of the medium-range jet 737 Max up again at the end of the year at the end of 2024. However, after six loss years in a row, the manufacturer threatens the next problems by the customs policy of US President Donald Trump.
On the stock exchange, the numbers from the quarterly balance sheet caused relief: Boeing share rose by more than six percent in early US trade.
In the first quarter, Boeing delivered 130 passenger and freight jets, almost 50 more than a year earlier. At that time, the US Air Force Authority Faa Boeing had imposed a 737 max narrow restrictions after a almost accident. The supervisors took a close look at the works, and since then the manufacturer must not expand the production of its 737 series via the 38 machines previously achieved.
However, Boeing has not come to this level even since then. Ortberg expected to do this in the current year. He also hopes that the FAA will then allow the manufacturer a further increase to 42 machines per month.
The world’s largest aircraft manufacturer Airbus from Europe wants to manufacture a total of 75 copies per month from its competing model family A320neo from 2027 – the order books are that thick. Last year, Airbus delivered 766 aircraft across all model rows. Boeing did less than half as many with 348 machines.
In the new year it looks better for Boeing, also because the US company handed over more pre-produced machines to its customers. Accordingly, the quarterly turnover rose by 18 percent to $ 19.5 billion (just under EUR 17.2 billion). The bottom line was that a loss of $ 31 million was a year earlier after a short amount of 355 million.
At the same time, the group burned significantly less money in the past quarter than in early 2024. With minus $ 2.3 billion dollars, the adjusted cash flow was still deep in the red area.
However, the consequences of the tariffs introduced by Trump threaten the aircraft manufacturer’s business. After the US President had recently imposed high punitive tariffs against China, the Asian country reacted to US products with counter-tariffs of 125 percent. Boeing jets for Chinese airlines became more than twice as expensive as before. In the meantime, the country’s airlines no longer accept machines from the manufacturer.
