In the land of the bargainers, many people now prefer bank card or smartphone to the cash. However, it also depends on the income of how purchases will be paid at the cash register.
According to surveys, most people in Germany do not want to do without cash – but at the cash register, however, a majority prefer to pay cashless.
In a YouGov survey for Postbank, almost two thirds (61.4 percent) of the 2,060 respondents stated that they pay for purchases primarily with checking card, credit card or mobile via smartphone or smartwatch.
Contactless payment popular
Above all, the quick payment in passing by, which was advertised as particularly hygienically during Corona pandemic, is popular: Almost 45 percent of the respondents handle their shops in this way by keeping the payment card or smartphone at the cash register.
“Every sixth consumer who prefers to pay contact without contact says that he needs almost no cash anymore,” says Thomas Brosch, Head of Digital Sales at Postbank. “Cash is no longer king.”
Those who earn less often pay bar
According to the data collected from March 21st to 24th, 2025, a good third (35.6 percent) regularly takes effects and coin. Above average, people with less income pay bars – also because they then keep a better overview of their finances: In respondents with a monthly budget net income of less than 2,500 euros, 42.7 percent prefer cash. Survey with monthly income of more than 2,500 euros prefers cashless payment methods (69 percent).
