Federal Statistical Office: Orders on the construction decrease strongly

Orders on the construction decrease vigorously

After a strong increase at the beginning of the year, the construction industry received significantly fewer orders in February. The industry suspects a political reason behind it.

The orders in February have decreased significantly in the crisping German construction industry. The companies adjusted a minus of 7.5 percent to the previous month of January, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office. Compared to the same month last year, the order volume shrank by 0.5 percent.

“The significant increase in order in January was only a straw fire,” says the managing director of the construction industry association, Tim-Oliver Müller. After all, housing is not affected by the decline, but a price -adjusted plus of 20 percent in the first two months of the year.

Civil engineering with order minus of almost 15 percent

There were fewer orders, especially in public buildings and in economic civil engineering, as well as road construction and the train. Müller says: “The declines are primarily due to the provisional housekeeping. Since the traffic lights out in late 2024, no new projects have been allowed to be awarded. If the new federal budget in 2025 is only to be decided in autumn 2025, the federal government as an investor would have been almost a whole year.” From the association’s point of view, this would mean a disaster for the location and the construction industry.

However, the sales of the companies increased in February. The companies had 1.8 percent more business than a year earlier. Including the price increases, revenues rose by 4.0 percent.
