China says there has been no discussions in the trade dispute so far and contradicts President Trump. He speaks of many conversations with head of state XI, but leaves open when that was.
The question of whether there are negotiations in the trade dispute between the USA and China is answered differently from both sides. U.S. President Donald Trump has now evaded to talk to head of state XI Jinping in a demand. On a first question before his departure to Rome, whether he had spoken to XI, Trump replied, “numerous times”. Trump said later on the specific question of whether he has spoken to the Chinese head of state since the beginning of the customs dispute: “I don’t want to comment on it, but I often spoke to him.”
China speaks of “fake news”
Trump had previously spoken of negotiations with China several times, even said that the United States and China were in daily contact. This was rejected as “fake news” from a Chinese side. There are no consultations or negotiations between China and the United States in the customs question.
China and the USA are in a bitter trade dispute. Trump had imposed up to 145 percent on goods from China. Beijing reacted with 125 percent tariffs from US goods.
