Overnight stays when camping climb on record

Vacation in the tent, motorhome or camper bus has been trendy for years. In 2024, the number of overnight stays on campsites increased. This also has a significant impact on prices.

At campsites in Germany, more people have overnight people last year. With almost 42.9 million, a new accommodation record was recorded, as the Federal Statistical Office announced. According to this, there were 1.4 percent more overnight stays in this country in Germany than 2023 (42.3 million) and almost a fifth (19.9 percent) more than in the pre-corona year 2019.

The numbers have doubled within 20 years. In 2004 there were still 21.4 million overnight stays at German campsites. For comparison: the overall number of overnight stays rose by almost half during the period.

Camping vacation has been trendy for years. With the exception of the Corona Years 2020 and 2021, when there were travel limits and housing banks, overnight stays in recent years has increased almost continuously.

Like motorhomes in Germany also exceeded the brand of one million registered vehicles in April, according to the Caravaning Industry Association. Since 2015 alone, the annual new registrations of motorhomes in Germany have more than doubled.

Camping boom lets prices rise

However, the boom also has prices climbing. According to the Federal Statistical Office, overnight stays on campsites have been more expensive in recent years than the overnight prices in total: 2024 motorhome parking spaces were a quarter (27.7 percent) more expensive than in the Corona year 2020.

Baltic Sea and North Sea most popular at Campern

Popular destinations remain unchallenged in the travel destinations. Most campers also moved to the Schleswig-Holstein Baltic Sea with 3.4 million overnight stays in 2024. This was followed by the Black Forest (2.6 million), the Lower Saxony North Sea coast (1.9 million) and the Bavarian Allgäu (almost 1.8 million).

Camping guests from abroad are particularly drawn to the southwest of Germany. In 2024, as in 2023, they spent most nights in the Black Forest, the regions of Mosel-Saar, the Rhineland-Palatinate Eifel, Lake Constance Oberschwaben and the Bavarian Allgäu.
