Work remains expensive in the industrial country of Germany. However, the highest increases in labor costs are registered in the east of the EU.

The work factor is more expensive in Germany than on the average of the EU. Employers from industry and service had to spend 43.40 euros per hour in the past year, as the Federal Statistical Office reports.

That was the seventies of an EU country and well above the community average of 33.50 euros. The highest labor costs were registered in Luxembourg with 55.20 euros and the lowest in Bulgaria with 10.60 euros.

The gross wage costs and non-wage costs such as social contributions are taken into account in the comparison. In the different wage levels, the productivity of companies as well as the tax load and the enforcement power of the unions are reflected.

The highest increases in wage costs were found compared to 2020 in recovering economies such as Poland (+19 percent), Croatia (14.2 percent), Bulgaria (13.9 percent) or Romania (13.5 percent). In the Czech Republic there was the slightest increase of 1.3 percent. With an increase of 5 percent, Germany was on the average of the EU countries.
