Environmental associations: no longer buy liquid gas from Russia

Russian natural gas – liquefied and pumped on tanker still comes to Europe in considerable quantities. Environmental associations require the future Chancellor Friedrich Merz to prevent this.

Environmental organizations from Germany and Ukraine require the final departure from Russian natural gas. In an open letter, you will ask the expected future Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) to work against the indirect financing of the Russian war of aggression on Ukraine by buying gas. The organizations criticize that the federal company Sefe, once a subsidiary of the Russian state company Gazprom, refer to “record quantities” on Russian liquid gas (LNG) for Europe.

The previous federal government promised to gradually stop Russian gas imports. “We therefore ask you to change and arrange a change of course here, to stop the indirect support of the Russian war of aggression on Ukraine through SEFE,” says the letter to Merz. The seven signatories include German Environmental Aid (DUH), the Munich Environmental Institute, Razom WE Stand and Business 4 Ukraine.

After the Russian attack on Ukraine in 2022, the EU imposed numerous sanctions against Russian energy sources such as coal and oil. The EU does not want to import gas from Russia by 2027, but this project is not legally binding. Since the turn of the year, Ukraine no longer has had Russian natural gas passed and has prevented the transit through pipelines about its territory. Last year, the EU imported 18 percent more natural gas from Russia last year than in 2023. According to Ember, Italy and France have increasingly moved into gas from Russia.

Criticism of debate on commissioning north stream 2

The environmental associations also turned against a now discussed commissioning of the Baltic Sea pipeline Nord Stream 2. “The commissioning of Nord Stream 2 would not only co-finance Putin’s war treasury, but also make Europe dependent on fossil natural gas and thus sabotage the climate protection goals,” writes Sascha Müller-Kraenner, federal manager of the DUH.

The pipeline was supposed to deliver Russian gas through the Baltic Sea to Germany, was finished, but never went into operation. The gas business was put on hold in February 2022 after Russia’s attack.
