Educators do important work every day – with patience and strong nerves they accompany children on their way. But how does this use affect financially?

In principle, the payment always depends on many factors: in addition to their own experience and the type of facility in which you work, the federal state also plays a role.According to the Federal Employment Agency, however, it can be said that the average content for the profession as a “educator” is a full -time gross at full -time.
Important: It is not only about educators in kindergartens, but also about people who work in a home, for example, in a Waldorf facility, in primary school care or language support.
As already mentioned, the salary varies strongly depending on the federal state. While specialists in Bavaria come to an average of EUR 3,948 (the German leader), it is only EUR 3,378 gross in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The state is thus the bottom of the state.
But how do these differences come about?
Why do educators earn different a lot?
The fact that educators earn different a lot depending on the establishment and state is due to the TVöD, the collective agreement for the public service. Among other things, it regulates how many educators earn in municipal institutions. There are various stages at TVöD that are based on professional experience and additional qualifications.
The entry group for educators is usually located in the pay group S 8a or S 8b. With increasing experience, the salary manager is slowly climbing up. But: the same TVöD does not automatically mean the same wage, since there are municipal deviations, i.e. a TVöD for North Rhine-Westphalia, for Berlin, … etc.
And it is also important: the TVöD only applies to urban daycare centers. Kindergartens that are in church sponsorship, for example, can freely determine the salaries. Even if many facilities are based on the TVöD.
Again and again strikes for more content and better working conditions
In recent years, educators have repeatedly strike. The reason? Better working conditions and higher wages. Many demand recognition of the demanding work that they do every day. After all, the burden is high: large groups, lack of staff and high demands on pedagogical work lead to stress.
Therefore, negotiates again and again about the tariffs. The last tariff cleaning, which also meant a salary increase for educators, was in the spring of 2023.The next tariff round will be coming up in the coming year. And it is already clear what is required: more salary. The Union and Science union announced in October that “eight percent more salary is requested, but at least 350 euros more per month”.
If it would happen in the coming year, the content of teachers would continue to increase. A demand that many who had to take care of many children for a long time can probably understand …
