More and more apartments are booked online

Vacation in a German apartment begins more and more with an online booking. This offers opportunities for the providers of smaller units.

If you want to book a holiday apartment or a holiday home in Germany, you are using the Internet more and more. Last year alone, the number of overnight stays booked online for four leading platforms grew by 22.6 percent, as the Federal Statistical Office announced. The 60.4 million overnight stays also exceeded the level from the pre-Corona year 2019 with 37.2 million overnight stays.

Data from the Airbnb, Booking.com, Tripadvisor and Expedia platforms were evaluated for the statistics. Accordingly, 95 percent of the online overnight stays took place in accommodation companies with fewer than ten beds. They are therefore not shown in the official tourism statistics. In 2024, around 96.8 million overnight stays in holiday apartments and holiday homes were reported to the larger providers with at least ten beds.

A almost third of the online bookers come from abroad. Their number rose somewhat slower at 20.3 percent in the previous year than that of the guests from Germany, which increased by 23.6 percent. The largest group among the 18.4 million overnight stays of foreign guests came from the Netherlands before Poland (1.8 million) and the USA (1.4 million).

Most online contracts came about for accommodations in Bavaria. In Berlin, with 70.4 percent of the overnight stays, foreigners mainly booked, while German customers in particular wanted to spend the night on the North and Baltic Sea. In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, almost 93 percent of all bookings from people came from domestic.
