The smartphone is always used less than a phone

Calling, speaking, hanging up – people stay in touch with phone calls. But classic phone calls get out of fashion. This is due to the Internet – and other forms of exchange.

The Germans use the cell phone less and less to make calls. In 2021 there were still 163 billion mobile phone calls in Germany, so this number fell to only 145 billion by 2024, as the Federal Network Agency announced on DPA request.

The decline in landline is even stronger and it used to use. In 2020 there were still 104 billion minutes of conversation. By 2024, this year fell by almost half to just 57 billion minutes, in which the classic landline telephone was talked about.

However, the number of discussions about messengers such as WhatsApp, Signal and Threema as well as other Internet services is increasing. In 2022 there were still 121 billion audio calls, so it was 197 billion last year. Video talks also go up steeply, from 143 billion in 2022 to 184 billion in 2024.

Often everyday communication is no longer about discussions, but about chat messages, also called immediate messages – whether texts, photos, voice messages, videos or emojis. According to the information, 902 billion of such immediate messages were sent in Germany last year and thus 11 billion more than a year earlier.
